Student Film: “Extravagant Living”
July 12th, 2006 by Matt

I just got a copy of Student Film‘s EP. I couldn’t really say how old it is, but it’s new to me. Prior to this, I’d only heard “D Sanchez,” and loved it; but these songs leave that in the dust. It’s produced by Allan Vest of the Starlight Mints, so you know it’s got one supporter that you can trust.

It’s weird that a band can be so reminiscent of other bands, but still be such an entity of their own; but that’s exactly what Student Film is like. At times it’s a bit of Lovely Feathers songwriting or Starlight Mints production (I wonder why?), but Student Film are defintely their own creation. “Extravagent Living” is a bit of quirky jangle-pop that jumps along on the sturdy legs of the rhythm section; whereas “Oxycontinental Breakfast” rips along on a powerful guitar riff.

I normally don’t get too up-in-arms about Pitchfork reviews, but giving Anathallo’s new album a 2.7 is just harsh.
Oh, I’m on my way up to Cincinnati to catch Oh No! Oh My! at WOXY. I might be allowed to spin a couple songs a sort of a ghost DJ sort of thing. If you hear a Bishop Allen or Starlight Mints song between noon and when Oh No! play, you’ll know I had a hand in it. But if not, you can still listen to their performance 2PM EST and look for my photos shortly thereafter.
