Remember when I said I hadn’t listened to the new Mountain Goats EP? Problem solved. I’m probably alone in this, but the first thing that caught my eye was that they had done a Trembling Blue Stars cover. For some reason the original was never one of my favorite TBS songs, but the Mountain Goats don’t do a half bad job of it. It is better than the original? I don’t know; but it’s different.
MP3: The Mountain Goats - Sometimes I Still Feel The Bruise (Trembling Blue Stars)
Maybe I haven’t been listening to the right Mountain Goats songs, but they really impressed me with their variety and skill on this one. The bass line is quiet enough not to overpower the vocals or other instruments, but strong enough to where its importance is never understated. And while the vocals are–as is the case with most Mountain Goats songs–without a doubt the focus of the song, they still allow for the instruments to come into their own; a perfect backing for John’s delivery. In short, it’s a very well balanced song.
So De Novo Dahl just added a date in Owensboro, KY at Brother’s Pizza? As confused as I am by my curiosity over the state of the venue (is it a real pizza parlor?), I think I’ll try to make it. It’s July 21, so it’s totally doable.
