I don’t know why, but yesterday I randomly loaded up Scourge of the Sea’s Myspace page and listen to “Smitten Kitten.” You know how sometimes your body knows when you need more potassium, so you go have a bunch of bananas? Well, my ears were craving whatever minerals are in Scourge of the Sea. Maybe it’s because I’m currently a smitten kitten?

Scourge are rapidly becoming some of my new favorite lyricists. Just the opening lines of “Smitten Kitten” are enough to give me a goofy grin: “I don’t need to smoke with a fix like you.” It’s something that either you can or can’t relate to. And yes, the title does allow for a delightfully rhyming chorus, but it’s also got a point. You’ve heard of “love-sick puppy?” Well, a “smitten kitten” is a lot like that–only without all the slobber.
