As I’m finally getting to wade through the mound of cds that piled up in my pre- and post-Bonnaroo haze, I’m slowly getting to experience the last month of music. One of the more notable cds I received was The Donkeys’ self-titled release. It’s very plain and folksy, like some sort of teenaged Neil Young mixed with the best indie acoustic guitar band in your town.

Man, “She’s a Wolf” would have made a great tie-in with last week’s discussion of Wolf and Bear bands. It’s somber and slow, but yet still manages to be catchy. I’ve caught myself singing along to the “I aint no Red Riding Hood” part more than once while writing this. “Come On Virginia” is everything you love about modern folk, tucked neatly into one place. They’re no M. Ward or even Conor Oberst, but they do come across like a poor man’s Jeff Tweedy. The interesting thing is that a poor man’s Jeff Tweedy is still a really, really great thing to be. Plus, it’s worth it for the line “I know I’m handsome, but I get lonely too.”
Stereogum has the new Justin Timberlake single. I haven’t listened to it, but all the comments say it’s terrible. Instead I’ll use this as a chance to declare that I actually like the new Christina Aguilera song (”No Other Man,” I think is its name). I was driving around town today and heard it come on right after Gnarls’ “Crazy.”
There’s a great interview with Bryan Poole of the Late B.P. Helium over at Chartattack.
My friend Brad just showed me a great video game: Happy and Smile. It’s fantastic, but you should definitely play it in IE. It has this kinda cool, kinda annoying thing where the it lengthens vertically at points, and Firefox doesn’t always show you the whole screen.
