Mates of State Cover Gnarls

July 7th, 2006 by Matt

I’m not a huge Mates of State fan, but I am a big fan of both covers and Gnarl Barkley’s “Crazy.” Plus, today’s the Petticoat, Petticoat show in Lexington, and Dickie just loves Mates. So for those reasons up go the cover. Thanks to Ryspace for the MP3.

Just the fact that Mates covered Gnarls improves my opinion of them. They do a pretty good job with this one, but even just that they tried it is a victory. It feels weird to hear “Crazy” without the thumping bass that so well defines it, but the keyboard allows for an interesting take on it. I’m really curious to hear what they’d be able to do with this one in the studio. All in all, it’s a very cute cover; which is perfect, because for better or worse, “cute” is how you can perfectly sum up Mates of State.

So Mates of State always make me think of my friend Emily, which made me think of this story. So she’s in D.C. researching on some old women’s airplane race or whatever, and some stranger starts talking to her in the research area. She asks what Emily’s researching, and she tells her. Turns out this woman wrote the only book on the subject (Emily had it with her) and was still in touch with the daughter of the woman who won the race. Now that is crazy.
