The Apples in Stereo: “On Your Own”

What, you thought I would post a Ghostface song? Today kicks off the three-day Cincinnati festival, Desdemona. Headlining today is Ghostface, preceeded by The Apples in Stereo. I’m predicting a good number of new songs (“Skyway” and “Energy” would be great), and their classics as well. While we probably won’t luck out and get this one, it’s always been one of my favorites.

MP3: The Apples in Stereo – On Your Own
This and “Strawberryfire” probably have my favorite drumming on any Apples in Stereo song. Hilarie actually gets just a little bit funky around the one minute mark, and I love it. If I were a girl, this song would totally be my theme song. It’s about a young woman trying to succeed on her own–go figure. It doesn’t stray too much into the feminism bit, but keeps with a theme that pops up more than a couple times in Robert’s songs: it’s us against the world. Only in this case, he’s only offering support; it’s up to her to make it.

I’ll be leaving for Desdemona shortly. If any of you are still on the fence about it, I’d highly encourage you to take the plunge. If nothing else, support their effort to bring good music to Cinci. I’ll be doing a recap of each day’s events here on YANP (hopefully a bit faster than I’ve been doing for Bonnaroo–Radiohead’s coming!), so you can look forward to that.
