Viva Voce: “So Many Miles”
June 6th, 2006 by Matt
My friend Jill told me that I need to break in my new room by throwing a one-man dance party. While I’ll most likely wind up shaking my stuff to !!! or Danger Mouse, I think Viva Voce are ahead of the pack for the rock-out jam of the year. “So Many Miles” is the first hint we’re getting of Get Yr Blood Sucked Out, which will come out on Barsuk on September 12th.
MP3: Viva Voce – So Many Miles
“So Many Miles” kicks off the way most Led Zeppelin jams end: with crashing drumrolls and what sounds like the distorted death of an electric guitar. In a way, that’s a perfect launching point for Viva Voce–the death of a standard approach to music. Am I naive enough to think that they’re breaking into a whole new genre Not quite. But this is far from a basic blues scale.”So Many Miles” is has been called a “guitar epic,” and rightly so. Throughout its eight minute life span, the guitar careens and cries out, all the while supported by the skeletal structure provided by an excellent bass riff.
