Xiu Xiu have never been one of my favorite bands. However, I think Final Fantasy’s He Poos Clouds was just the bridge I was looking for. Owen’s wonderful album has made me more receptive to curious music like Xiu Xiu’s new song, “Buzz Saw” off their new album The Air Force.

I don’t know if Owen from Final Fantasy tried to get his voice to slightly emulate the hesitant, breathy cadence of Jaime from Xiu Xiu, but the two are remarkably similar. And while calling the song “bare” might be an understatement, my favorite musical bit in the song is the unexpected burst in the middle of the line “you want to run away” and again at “how is it you thought I might be?” It sounds silly, but it’s getting to the point where I wait and wait for that one change-up in the middle of an otherwise calm song.
