The Boy Least Likely To: “Rock Upon a Porch With You”

May 26th, 2006

I’m almost waiting for The Boy Least Likely To to let me down. I find it highly improbable that almost every song they write is one that I identify with completely. “Rock Upon a Porch With You” is a bside from the “Hugging My Grudge” single and is well in line with the sound established by The Best Party Ever.

Thematically, “Rock Upon a Porch With You” is like a less questioning version of “When I’m 64.” Our protagonist doesn’t wonder if his lover is going to still be with him in his old age–he knows. “Someday when I’m older,” the song goes, “I’ll rock upon a porch with you.” The instrumentation is a little more sparse than most of TBLLT’s songs, often carried by nothing more than handclaps and a perfectly fitting drum beat, it’s a great way to make sure the listener soaks up every last beautiful lyric. God, I hope this is the future of twee-pop.

I’m off to see XMen 3. I’ve heard mixed reviews, but hopefully I’ll enjoy it as much as I did the last one!
