Earlier this year, Yo La Tengo took a weird route to my heart and won me over through their annual covers set at WFMU. I don’t know why, but it just made me see them in a more lighthearted manner, and I loved them even more. Now they’re poised to release I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your A** on Matador, and then go rock some venues.

While not that familiar with YLT’s previous work (I have I Can Hear… and that’s about it), I can say that this is far poppier than what I was expecting. Yo La whip out the piano and trumpets and put them to excellent use. I’m kind of sad that the album won’t be out until September 12th, because it’s sounded like it would make a great summer soundtrack. Driving music to Bonnaroo, anyone?
(thanks to Frank for pointing out that YLT had a new song online)
Honestly, The Apples in Stereo show in Lexington tomorrow–you should go. And if you do, come say hi. I’ll be the big-nosed, shaggy-haired kid.
