Kite Flying Society: “If I Could Split”

It always amazes me which bands get picked up by the blogosphere and which don’t. Honestly, it’s a mystery to me. If things worked the way I thought they did, Kite Flying Society would be the toast of the internet. They’re talented, fresh musical voices who’ve got nothing but good works under their belt. But hey, I don’t run the internet.

When you come out of the snow, a house that would previously have been considered only mildly warm can seem as hot as a fire. It’s the interesting effect of contrast, and it’s that power that Kite Flying Society use to kick off “If I Could Split.” The intro has the vast majority of the instruments and vocals concentrated in the left channel. While that isn’t really anything inventive, this little studio trick gives an added oomph to the song when it really takes off. The slight pause before ‘and so we spent the days inside’ is followed by the rush of music to both ears–a bit of aural satisfaction for the right side.

Musically on this song, Kite Flying Society wind up coming across as the teenage boldness to The Boy Least Likely To’s youthful innocence. Their lyrics combine vivid imagery ( “If there was just one song to play / and violators would be shot / well I would play on my piano / till my fingers melted off” ) with a romantic language to tell their retrospective narrative.
