The Submarines: “Love and Hate”

I feel bad including this in my pre-commentary, but sometimes you just have to say it: Blake Hazard of The Submarines is F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great-granddaughter. I guess that explains all the crazy-insightful lyrics in their new album Create A New State.

MP3: The Submarines – Peace and Hate
Okay, let’s skip the boring intro and get right down to it: this song is wonderful. Everything is expertly arranged and composed, right down to the five-second pause before the refrain. But the real winner are the lyrics. There are so many feelings that love creates–very few of them rational–but yet The Submarines do a superb job of explaining them in our limited vocabularity.

If you should go / I won’t have you to blame for my unhappiness, for darker days. / When will I learn / It’s not your fault. Breaking down cannot be cured by breaking up.
