Stephen Malkmus: “Johnny One-Take”

Last night while driving back from the Mates of State show (which was actually really good), we got on a mini-kick of Malkmus. This song is for our driver, Dickie, who didn’t have it and I’m sure will love it. To the best of my knowledge, it’s only been played live. If anyone has a studio version of it, feel free to email it to me. It’s one of my favorite SM tunes, so it’d be appreciated.

At first, I thought of this song as sort of the solo Malkmus stereotypical song. Two guitars doing their own thing, shuffling drums, and lyrics that are both strange and kinda funny. But upon further listenings, I was pleased to discover that there’s actually more to it. “Johnny One-Take” is not only one of the most musically pleasing songs he’s written, but also the name of one of his most humorous characters. Even Stephen gets a little giggle in him during the line “but I have the power to move you to tears with these vocals cords.”

New to Malkmus? Might I suggest that you download this fine tune?
