Sometimes promos sit on my desk for an embarrassingly long amount of time. So the fact that Grumpy Bear’s new EP, Songs From The Abattoir sat there for a good week or so only adds to my amazement with it. I didn’t expect much, but it’s quickly climbing my iTunes charts. It’s beautiful and honest, so I highly suggest that you give it a shot.
MP3: Grumpy Bear - Luis Bunuel
Grumpy Bear have revealed me to be the hypocrite that I really am. I always confess that I love it when songs mutate their melodies or completely jump into a different form (Man Man’s “Ice Dogs,” for example). But when I listen to “Luis Bunuel,” I’d give anything for the high-pitched chorus of “How you gonna catch my eye?” to continue on for the full five minutes. But instead of falling back on their well-crafted melody, this duo push the song in many different directions. Sometimes it comes across like an acoustic Unicorns (though they do whip out the synth in later songs), while other times it’s a dash of Death Cab For Cutie songwriting, or Jose Gonzalez guitar. And I guess I should thank them. Songs that rely too heavily on a catchy ten seconds of music that get repeated over and over are likely to get stuck in your head quickly, but worn out within the day. I don’t forsee myself having that problem with this one.
