Ivana C Demos: “Threads” & “First Train”

March 20th, 2006 · 9 Comments

I can’t help but feel partially responsible for the marvel that is Ivana C. No, I didn’t write any of her songs; nor have I really had any contact with her at all. But I have been crying out for a Joanna Newsom alternative. Someone with her songwriting talent, but who doesn’t sound so….strange. Ivana […]

Q&A with Man Man

March 20th, 2006 · 44 Comments

Somehow, after losing his band to differences, Honus of Man Man went on to assemble a completely new crew and write one of 2006’s most creative albums: Six Demon Bag. The band are currently touring across America, and will be playing at the Pitchfork Music Festival this summer. Luckily the band had time to stop […]

Montreal darlings, The Dears, have featured a new demo on Bella Union’s website. Entitled “There Goes My Outfit,” the song features Murray Lightburn on guitar and vocals. While the demo is pretty bare, it’s just a glimpse at the full-band version which will appear on their upcoming album.

New Pipettes: “Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me”

March 19th, 2006 · 25 Comments

Ordinarily I’d be pretty put off when a band decided to try and “turn back the clock to a time before The Beatles ruined everything;” but with The Pipettes…it’s nothing but love. To get the full impact of this song, watch the video. Adorability overload.

MP3: Heypenny - Parade
While most of the Heypenny songs that I’ve heard seem to sound like a poppier Wilco, this track […]

New Spoon: “Target”

March 18th, 2006 · 8 Comments

This is a recording of a new Spoon song that was played yesterday and today at SXSW. While its first appearance, apparently, was played with a full band, this recording is of just of Britt performing it.
MP3: Spoon - Target (Live @ Pok-E-Jo’s 3.17.06)
I can’t help but shake the feeling that “Target” (as my friend […]

The Boy Who: “Marvelous and Magnificent”

March 17th, 2006 · No Comments

Hiatus. What an unhappy word. For bands it usually means ‘we’re too nice to announce our breakup.’ Hopefully that’s not the case here. I just found out that one of my favorite little treasures, The Boy Who, was going on haitus. Hopefully this won’t be the end for a band with such potential; but such […]

The Snow Fairies

March 17th, 2006 · 50 Comments

Let’s hear it for unexpected Myspace friending! The Snow Fairies friended me the other day–much to my happiness. They were a delight to me, as I’m sure they will be to you. Think a female-fronted Lucksmiths that wouldn’t be out of place on Matinee.
