Site Updates and The Talking Heads

So before I get into the boring site stuff, I thought I’d give you a taste of what I’ve been listening to lately. In addition to being head-over-heels in love with the new Starlight Mints, Essex Green, Islands and Bishop Allen releases, I’m also going through a rather lengthy Talking Heads phase. Here are two songs that will no doubt reveal how little I know about the back end of the TH’s catalogue.

MP3: Talking Heads – Sax and Violins
I had never even heard of this song until my friend Austin sent it to me about a year ago. After doing a little Wikipedia-ing, I found out that this is from the Until the End of the World soundtrack. And while I originally found it to be “not poppy enough,” it quickly grew into one of my favorites. I really don’t think there could have been a better “last” Talking Heads song. It’s evident that Bryne had no dillusions about having there be a lasting reunion or future album. He just wanted to make one last great song with the band that he formed. And with wordplay like this one, you really can’t go wrong.

MP3: Talking Heads – And She Was
I recently took my first shot at playing vinyl at WRFL. I was worried about ruining the equipment or not getting fades right, but I think that I did a pretty good job. For my first track, I chose this Talking Heads classic (though I played the “extended mix”) and someone called in to tell me that I “couldn’t have picked a better song.” This song is so simple that you’ve got to admire Byrne’s guts. Here he is, the master of music at the time, and he decides to write a simple pop song. While I’m not sure that most Heads fans agree with me about the quality of “And She Was,” I will say that I’m in love with it.

Now, the web site stuff. My feed seems to not be working. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong? I’d like to get this fixed as quickly as possible, but I’ve got a busy three days ahead of me.

Also, let me know what you think of the constant changes that YANP is going through. I moved the search bar to the right side, so hopefully it’s not hitting the post headers for some of you using IE or Macs. If you have any suggestions, questions or gripes–this is the time to share them.

  1. something got wrong when installing wordpress? you could reïnstall the rss functions.
or maybe its in the options > reading?
some plugins conflicting with the feeds?

  2. Is it me (I’m on a Mac in Safari) or is the RSS link not working (for us)?
I click on the RSS thing up the top right of the address bar there, like with any other site, and get a ‘not found’-type thing.

  3. “Safari can’t open the page.
Safari can’t open the page “feed://”. The error was: “unknown error” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message”

    That’s what I’m getting.

  4. right with Tim on ‘And She Was’! haven’t heard it in a few years. it always flashes me right back to that time. still remember the vid too – pre-flash flash, ya know?

  5. With the exception of the feed, things look good on the latest version of Safari for OS X. Banner, sidebars look fine. I like the redesign, by the way. Streamlines things without losing the bespoke YANP feel.

And now for shameless self (and other) promotion: good weather for a blogroll, right?

P.S. “Who is it?” off of Talking Heads 77.

  6. Someone heard the Talking Heads at work the other day and tryin’ to be all hipster said, “They sorta sound like the Arcade Fire.”

My smug ass had to snicker.

+1 on the feed issue, and also liking the rest of the design.
-1 on using Internet Explorer. Ever.

  7. I got some new Starlight Mints tracks on my little blog. I don’t want to advertise the link but it’s in my profile if you want to check it out.

  8. Thanks for the input, guys. I played around with the column widths today. Anyone care to say if it fixed the right sidebar problem?
