The ‘New’ Islands and The Old Cure

January 25th, 2006

Allegedly, yesterday was statistically supposed to be the worst day of the year. Strangely enough, yesterday was one of the best days I’ve had in a while. But if you all were one of those suffering from a crappy January 24th, here are two songs that I think might brighten your day.

MP3: Islands - I Feel Evil (Creeping In) (live Philadelphia, PA 12.05.2005)
Ever hear a song that seems to exist solely for the purpose of getting to the chorus? This is that song. Thankfully for Islands, the chorus of this song is so addictive that I suggest that it be tested for cocaine. The pre-chorus drums crescendo nicely into a stomping good refrain that probably isn’t evil, but is certainly makes me think Islands struck a deal with the Devil. While it might not speak much to me lyrically (but then again, I can’t make out all the words), this is definetely one of my favorite Islands songs so far.

MP3: The Cure - Let’s Go To Bed (Acoustic)
A random download back in high school, this was my first introduction to the Cure. While I eventually heard the original version, this acoustic take has always held a special place in my heart. Not only is it witty and lyrically inspiring, but the perfectly planned bass line coupled with the guitar support always seem to make me bust a little move.

Marbles is opening for Of Montreal in Kentucky. This was one of the things that made me happy today.

Chromewaves has a great article on downloading and listener apathy. Frank manages to combine external sources with his own opinions to make a great read.

Questionable Content is headed in an exciting new direction.

Dodge has other Isobel/Lanegan songs up.

Sixeyes has a fivepack of Bound Stems
