Decemberists’ New Elliott Smith Cover: “Clementine”

This is off the new To: Elliott, From: Portland album which features artists from the Portland area covering songs by the late musician Elliott Smith. Here’s the one that I’m sure will interest most of you.

I’d like to take this opportunity to point out how smart Colin Meloy is. He took the minimalist approach to this cover, and it turned out better than I could have expected. Sure, he could have killed it with strings, drums and layered vocals – but you have to play to fit the song. Employing only guitar, vocals and occasional harmonica, Colin was able to create a cover that’s every bit as stirring as the original. His vocal work in this song literally gave me goosebumps.

Heh. Looks like Mogwai complained about STG (I guess for hosting some new songs), and they got their hosting revoked for a little bit. Glad to have ’em back!

Big cheers go out to Indie Interviews for being mentioned in Spin magazine! I think the logical next step for him would be to try and be mentioned in the Bible. As far as I know, it barely edges out Spin in terms of readership.

  1. I will say that it is a good cover, but I think that much more could have been done with the end of the song. That is the song’s strong point and one of Elliott’s most beautiful moments, in my opinion. Gets me every time, no matter what. Other than that, I did enjoy it. I can’t see myself listening to it too much, though.
