The Light Footwork were actually the first band I asked to take part in The 12 Days of Mixmas. If they’d said no, then I probably would have scrapped the entire thing. But thankfully they not only agreed, but were downright excited about it. I love these guys.
Remember when I flipped out about The Light Footwork? Well, it was for a good reason. Their debut album, One State, Two State, has been on all sorts of year end lists; as well as being one of the most refreshing pieces of music in recent memory (order it here). Jay Underwood, the male half of the duo, was kind enough to contribute what can only be described as the craziest mix I’ve yet featured. The theme is incredibly creative and the songs are a wonderful blend of genres. Oh, and I found this picture of Jay to be particularly fitting, given the mix.
Mix 9: ‘The Light Footwork’s favorite songs from artists with lead singers who have the same initials as our favorite NBA basketball players with criminal records’ by The Light Footwork
NBA Player: Anthony Mason of the Bucks (Battery on Police Officer)
MP3: Aimee Mann – Driving Sideways
This isn’t my favorite Aimee Mann track, but it was the first song I ever heard from her, and I fell in love with her instantly. Regardless of whether or not you like her work, you have to admit that this year’s Forgotten Arm is hands down the best concept album ever written about a Vietnam vet turned alcoholic boxer.
NBA Player: Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson of the Spurs (Battery and Unlawful Possession of Firearm)
MP3: Guff Rhys of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Happiness
A friend of mine put this beautiful song on a mix tape for me once, and I had to listen to it like 5 times in a row–which, incidentally, was a huge pain because I had to keep rewinding it back to the beginning over and over again. Later, I made my own mix tape with this song on it. The whole side A was just this song repeated. Needless to say, it got really old very fast and now I hate it. But it’s still beautiful.
NBA Player: Jason Richardson of the Warriors (Domestic Violence)
MP3: J. Robbins of Channels – Fear is a Man’s Best Friend
I’ve been a huge fan of J. Robbins since high school. I love the way he elegantly fits words I’ve never heard before (like ‘somnambulist’) in his songs and its not even awkward. Jawbox and Burning Airlines were the bands of choice when I needed to rock out and play air guitar in my room. He’s also one of the greatest producers out there today. His new project, Channels, is very promising. Can’t wait until the full length comes out. This song is a crazy version of an old John Cale song.
NBA Player: Sam Mack of the Rockets (Marijuana Possession)
MP3: Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian – Woman’s Realm
Ok, so I go back and forth with Belle and Sebastian. Sometimes I think they’re the best band ever and then other times I think they’re the best thing ever. It is difficult to pick a favorite song from this band, but at this given moment, this is it.
NBA Player: Jason Caffey of the Bucks (Assault Causing Bodily Harm)
MP3: Jeremy Chatelain of Cub Country – High Uinta High
This guy doesn’t get enough props. He was the lead singer for a metal band (which I’m not really into) called Handsome back in the early ’90’s. He then joined up with Blake Schwarzenbach and played bass for Jets to Brazil. If it weren’t for his Jets to Brazil connections, I probably would have missed his debut CD as Cub Country when it came out. It’s the type of sad/beautiful music that you can only make when you’re homesick and lonely.
NBA Player: Jerry Stackhouse of the Mavs (Assault)
MP3: Joe Strummer of the Clash – I’m so Bored with the U.S.A.
My sentiments exactly, Joe.
