12 Days of Mixmas: Day 6 – Chris of Gorilla vs Bear

These days, Gorilla vs. Bear is more of an unstoppable force of nature than a music blog. In fact, I’m pretty sure that I saw GvB pop up on the Doppler RADAR the other day. But enough with the hyperboles! Chris’ mix is a tongue-in-cheek write up of something so serious that the editors of Rolling Stone would give their autographed copies of Transformer to know: what band will be the next big thing.

Lemme admit something: I remember laughing a little when Chris emailed me and told me the name of his blog. Now, when your blog is named ‘You Aint No Picasso,’ you really have little room to laugh. But come on, ‘Gorilla vs. Bear’ is just too awesome. It was then that I knew Chris had the sense of humor that would go on to lead him into being one of the biggest fish in the blogging sea. I…I don’t know how to put this, but he’s kind of a big deal.

Mix 6: “Bands That Will Get So Big In 2006 That It Won’t Be Cool To Like Them Anymore, So You Better Like Them Now Before You’re Just a Total Bandwagon-Jumping Poser” by Chris of GvB

MP3: Birdmonster – All the Holes in the Walls
More songs like this, and this band will be able to completely shake those pesky Modest Mouse comparisons. These guys recently opened for the White Stripes, and allegedly, subsequently blew away the 4000 unsuspecting audience members. Look for an LP in early ’06.

Band Website: Annie Clark/St. Vincent (mp3 pending)
Definitely the least known on this list, because she hasn’t released anything yet. but this Polyphonic Spree member’s voice has been described as ‘an ethereal marriage of jeff buckley and bjork’, and her live show is breathtaking. Seriously.

MP3: Tapes ‘n Tapes – 10 Gallon Ascots
Probably not even the best song on their album, but the way the chorus swells makes me think these guys could be the best band in the world one day.

MP3: Love is All – Make Out Fall Out Make Up
Sweden is set to take over the world in ’06, and this band is leading the charge.

MP3: Peter and the Wolf – The Fall
This austin collective, headed up by Red Hunter, is notorious for playing shows in graveyards and other non-traditional venues. Hunter is a genius in my opinion, and this band is capable of magic.

  1. YANP, I love your blog. Dodge has bragged on it forever, and I can’t believe I’m just now getting around to checking it out. Great idea, with the 12 days of mixmas. Genuinely genius.

And I agree, Chris is a big deal, especially to those that know him well.

    Keep up the awesomeness!
