12 Days of Mixmas: Day 5 – Dodge from MOKB

It’s difficult to describe how I feel about Dodge. Actually, wait. No it isn’t. I love the big guy to death. Even though we’ve only met up once (Decemberists’ concert in Lville in…May?), I feel like we’ve known each other forever. So it should come as no surprise to any of you that I asked him to do today’s mix. I think you’ll agree that his is definetely a blog visitor’s delight. It’s full of rarities and the one thing I know you all love: COVERS!

Dodge has been running My Old Kentucky Blog since January ’05 and in that short time has quickly established himself as one of the best in the business. Those who read his site regularly will no doubt attest to the fact that he’s full of love for everyone. In fact, I’d say he’s the sole reason that the music blogging community has become so close in the past half year or so. He’s always promoting blogs that are just starting out and encouraging the ‘older’ ones to hold themselves to higher standards (this includes arguing with me and Chris about Sufjan). If you’re one of the two YANP readers that haven’t made their way to his website, I hope this will encourage you to do so.

Mix 5: ‘Cover Songs About Love’ by Dodge from MOKB

The holidays are all about love, Match.com makes more this time of year than like the rest of the year combined…I don’t know if that’s true, but I’m pretty sure I read it somewhere. Anyway, no one wants to be alone during the holidays. Friends and family are important, so cherish and appreciate them. All these songs are covers and obvs have a love related theme…I don’t know if any of them originally came from YANP, it’s possible, especially NMH, so if they did, I’m sorry, but in the name of love, you can deal…

1. MP3: Neutral Milk Hotel – I Love How You Love Me (Phil Spector Cover)
Well, most of you around YANP are NMH fans, so you know this is cool. I mean who didn’t get into the Grateful Dead at some point, or at least try? I love the Dead album American Beauty…it’s a stoned out groove and I can get with that.

2. MP3: Sufjan Stevens – The One I Love (R.E.M. Cover)
Yeah, I don’t love Sufjan, but I love R.E.M. and he does this song justice for sure.

3. MP3: Feeder – Beautiful Boy (John Lennon Cover)
Written and recorded not long after the birth of Sean Lennon to express the love the man was feeling. I look forward to being a dad one day…I never thought I’d say that. Whoa.

4. MP3: St. Etienne – Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Neil Young Cover)
A different take on this song, but a successful one. I love Neil and I really like St. Etienne, so this was a nice find.

5. MP3: Arcade Fire and U2 – Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division Cover) – Such a widely covered song, but that’s cause it’s so wonderful. I would have given my pinkies to see this live.

Be kind to your fellow man and remember that while this is “the season for love,” it shouldn’t be the only time for love.
