12 Days of Mixmas: Day 3 – John Vanderslice
December 15th, 2005 by Matt
I had intended for JV to feature somewhat later in the list of mixes. However, since today’s band is taking a little extra time to turn their mix in (note to self: plan ahead), and since John turned his in the day after I asked him to do it…he’s today’s lucky DJ.
John Vanderslice is quickly becomming a staple of the independent music community. In addition to running Tiny Telephone he also records spectacular albums in his spare time. His new album, Pixel Revolt, is getting all kinds of praise in the blogosphere as well as in ‘established’ outlets. You can grab some MP3s here.
Mix 3: ’5 Songs to Play Over and Over’ by John Vanderslice
MP3: Animal Collective (ft. Vashti Bunyan) – “I Remember Learning How To Dive” (Prospect Hummer EP)
Holy sh*t, have you heard this song? Sad and confounding, I’ve it looped 9-10 times in a row trying to figure out the chords and words.
MP3: King Geedorah – “Krazy World, feat. Gigan” (Take Me To Your Leader)
This album is amazing.
MP3: John Coltrane – “Untitled Original (Exotica)” (The Heavyweight Champion)
There is a fluidity to his phrasing and tone that is so unusual. Coltrane is adept at shifting from lightening fast riffs to slow, measured playing in the same bar.
MP3: J-Live – “Here” (The Hear After)
J-Live is a lyricist of the first order. His flow is so relentless and compressed you have to rewind over and over to get the entire thread of the song.
MP3: Tom Waits – “Alice” (Alice)
“And so a secret kiss
Brings madness with the bliss…
And I must be insane
To go skating on your name
And by tracing it twice
I fell through the ice
Of Alice”
