I think everyone has that band, artist or composer that is just a random island in their sea of musical tastes. One of my many, many islands is Scott Joplin - the dude who wrote “The Entertainer” and a bunch of other great piano tunes. So when The New Rags listed him as an influence, how could I not give them a listen?
The New Rags are what would happen if early-White Stripes got into a fight with (pre-Isaac Brock production work) Wolf Parade. They’re bluesy, jazzy and have a rockin’ keyboard. It’s for all these wonderful reasons that I’ll overlook the fact that the first six notes of the hook from “Your Room” are actually the “Go, go Power Rangers!” part of the Power Rangers theme song. It’s a great hook from a good song, but I sure did laugh when I realized that.
