Liam Gallagher once said in an interview that it was his dream to rob candlesticks from mansions with Lee Mavers. So who is this dashing young punk worthy of robbing the rich alongside the Oasis frontman? Well, I’ll tell you who he is. Lee Mavers is the brains behind the other great band from Liverpool - The La’s. The La’s were formed in the 80s, had a wonderful career and then laid somewhat dormant. Recently there’ve been talks that they’ll be supporing - you guessed it - Oasis on part of their European tour. But this post is more to introduce you to a band with which few people seem to be familiar. I’ll admit that it was Kristine that introduced me to the magical world of Lee Mavers just about half a year ago. The La’s are a delightful mix of 60s style guitar, 70s style songwriting, but with the biting lyrics that only the 80s and early 90s could bring. It’s almost as if stumbled across the secrets to songwriting. If you’d like more information than I’ve supplied here today, I highly suggest that you head oever to The La’s Forum to pick up countless rarities, bootlegs and TV appearances. If message boards aren’t your thing, there are a lot of fan sites out there.
MP3s:
There She Goes
This song is about heroin. Plain and simple. But for some reason, Sixpence None the Richer decided to cover it and make it about the Virgin Mary. Strange how the world works, isn’t it?
Callin’ All (1986 demo)
This is the song that got me hooked into The La’s. While it was actually the album version and not the ‘86 demo, I think they’re close enough for you to get the general feel for the song. As Kristine is fond of saying, “can you BELIEVE this song isn’t from the 60s?!”
Follow Me Down (1986 demo)
Sounds like they channeled the ghost of The Who to write this song. …What’s that?…Roger and Pete aren’t dead? I’ve got to fire my fact checker ;)
