Self is pretty darn cool. They come with high comments from my favorite (and only) stalker, so you simply must check them out. If not for me, do it for her. Or if that doesn’t work, do it for the fact that they have pretty much all of their albums online.
But anyways, Self isn’t afraid to write border-line cheesy lyrics over top of some dance-inducing beats. While many indie artists are afraid to mix groove with flowing, almost rap like lyrics, Matt Mahaffey knows that it’s the ticket to a memorable track. I guess it’s no wonder that he’s currently touring around the world with Beck as a member of his backing band. After repeated listenings, I’ve decided that this band is what Weezer wanted to sound like on the green album. While not every lyric seems to have a point, they fit together perfectly with the flow of the song. Not only that, but they get lodged in your brain like a crayon up a four year old’s nose. Try listening to This Is Love and tell me that you can’t imagine Rivers crying that he was bested at his own game.
MP3s:
Baby, Can You Dig Your Man? (my mind is going, isn’t this the same song title in The Stand?)
This Is Love (my stalker highly suggests this one)
Download all the rest of their songs (like 100 of them) at their fan website, SELFies
